Week 1 Injury Predictions: Calling It Before Friday
The official game-status designations don't land until Friday. Here's our forecast now — who plays, who sits, and where the Wednesday-to-Friday practice arc is the whole tell.
ZeroChalk Week 1 Injury Predictions — Calling It Before Friday
Posted: September 7, 2026
This is a prediction, not inside information. It's our best guess — read off early-week practice reports, beat reporting, and injury history — made ahead of the official Friday game-status designations. The NFL's real designations post during game week (roughly Wed–Fri, Sept 9–12). This is us calling it early on purpose; that's the edge, and it's also the risk. Re-check the final report before lineups lock, and play it accordingly.
The reactive injury report is easy: wait for Friday, read the tag, copy it down. Everyone has that. The edge is calling it before the tag exists — reading where a guy has actually been through the week and forecasting Friday's designation on Monday. Sometimes the practice arc has already decided it and the league just hasn't filed the paperwork. Sometimes it's a genuine coin flip and we tell you that too.
One scheduling note that matters this week: New England at Seattle kicks off Wednesday night (Sept 9), so the Patriots' and Seahawks' "game week" is compressed — their designations come first, and there's less runway for a late-week recovery. Everyone else runs the normal Wed–Fri arc into Sunday, Sept 13.
✅ We're calling PLAY (high conviction)
These practiced through the early week or never had real availability risk. Our forecast: they draw no worse than a "limited" tag and suit up.
- Christian McCaffrey (SF, RB) — camp calf tightness / workload management, nothing more. Back in full team drills, seen making cuts and looking explosive on Tuesday. No real availability risk. Predict: PLAY, no designation or a cosmetic one.
- Puka Nacua (LAR, WR) — the psoas/groin soreness that scared everyone in August is behind him. Returned to practice the prior Sunday and has practiced every day this week. Rams don't expect him to miss regular-season time. Predict: PLAY. (The off-field variable we flagged last week has quieted; if anything new surfaces, that's a separate story — but on the injury, he's fine.)
- Tyreek Hill (MIA, WR) — limited Wed/Thu with oblique and calf, then a full participant Friday with no designation. That's the exact arc you want to see. Predict: PLAY, clean.
- George Kittle (SF, TE) — off the Achilles, activated in late August, practicing, made the Australia trip. The only open question is snap count at 32 coming off the injury, not whether he plays. Predict: PLAY, monitor snaps.
- Cam Skattebo (NYG, RB) — full camp participant, taking live 11-on-11 reps, clearly the top back with Tracy and Singletary in passing-down roles. Given how gruesome the 2025 injury was, a full Week 1 go is itself the story. Predict: PLAY as the lead back.
- Mike Evans (SF, WR) — adductor kept him out much of the summer, but he's back practicing and made the trip. Predict: PLAY, mild limited-snap risk early.
- Tucker Kraft (GB, TE) — full participant the last two weeks off the knee. Predict: PLAY.
- Alec Pierce (IND, WR) — full practice Thursday off post-surgery ankle work, stepping into the No. 1 role. Predict: PLAY.
- Sam LaPorta (DET, TE) — practicing two weeks off the hip, working back to full speed. Predict: PLAY, snap count the only mild question.
- Patrick Mahomes (KC, QB) — full practice off the prior-season ACL, reports point to 100%. Predict: PLAY.
⛔ We're calling SIT / OUT (high conviction)
The practice arc here has effectively already decided it. Don't wait on these; move to the handcuff now.
- Chris Godwin (TB, WR) — leg. Reporting already has him out for the opener. Predict: OUT. Egbuka and McMillan absorb the target share.
- Alvin Kamara (NO, RB) — MCL sprain, has missed multiple weeks, timeline is roughly a month. Not appearing close. Predict: OUT (multi-week).
- TreVeyon Henderson (NE, RB) — right ankle, slipped on the turf Aug 24, hasn't practiced in two weeks, in street clothes ahead of Sunday's practice, likely a non-participant on the Patriots' first report. And New England plays Wednesday, so there's almost no runway. Rhamondre Stevenson is the beneficiary. Predict: SIT — leaning OUT for the Wednesday opener; if he's active, expect a minimal role.
- Keaton Mitchell (LAC, RB) — five-plus straight practices missed, undisclosed, needs an official update. Not rosterable-reliable for Week 1. Predict: SIT.
- Jordyn Tyson (NO, WR) — hamstring, already placed on short-term IR. Ruled out by definition. Predict: OUT (mid-October return window).
🎲 Coin flips — the practice arc IS the tell (our lean, watch Wed–Fri)
This is where the prediction earns its keep. Each of these turns on whether the guy practices — even limited — by Wednesday or Thursday. We give you the lean and the tell to watch.
- Ashton Jeanty (LV, RB) — low ankle sprain, no practice since Aug 23, but he's back on the field working with trainers on the side and the Raiders are preparing for him to play. Coach Kubiak said "yes" when asked if he's optimistic. Las Vegas plays Sept 13, so there's a little more runway than New England has. The tell: does he take real (even limited) team reps by Wed/Thu? If yes, he plays. If he's still off to the side Friday, this flips to doubtful. Lean: PLAY, moderate — the extra days help him.
- Malik Nabers (NYG, WR) — back/ACL recovery, conflicting reports, and his own comments this week weren't a firm yes. This one is genuinely live right up to Sunday. The tell: a full (not limited, not no-contact-jersey) practice by Thursday. Lean: coin flip, slight lean play — but this is the one skill name to double-check at kickoff.
- Breece Hall (NYJ, RB) — groin strain (Aug 17), called minor, 2–3 week timeline that lines up almost exactly with the Sept 13 opener. Doing side agility work and "moving well." Coach Glenn expects him ready. The tell: does he graduate from side work to team reps by mid-week? Lean: PLAY, moderate-high — but if he's still limited-only Friday, temper expectations on the workload.
- Jeremiyah Love (ARI, RB) — high ankle sprain from a preseason game, beat reports peg him at "50/50." High ankle sprains are slow, and "50/50" this late usually tilts toward a cautious hold on a rookie. The tell: any team-drill work by Thursday. Lean: coin flip, slight lean SIT — have a backup ready.
- Emeka Egbuka (TB, WR) — toe, still needs evaluation. With Godwin out, his volume just went up, which cuts both ways: more incentive to play him, more reason not to rush a toe. The tell: practices Wed/Thu without a setback. Lean: PLAY, low-to-moderate — the Godwin news makes him more likely to be pushed.
- Michael Penix Jr. (ATL, QB) — knee; he's returned to work the last couple weeks but Atlanta hadn't named a Week 1 starter as of early week. The tell: the starter announcement plus a full practice. Lean: questionable — don't commit until the QB1 call is public.
- Jonathon Brooks (CAR, RB) — knee soreness, missed some practices, coach "very optimistic." The tell: back to full by Thursday. Lean: PLAY, but confirm the workload split.
The bottom line
The compressed Wednesday opener (NE–SEA) is the wrinkle this week: Henderson has almost no runway, so we're leaning him out or minimal while everyone else at least gets to Friday. Your two true coin flips are Nabers (double-check at kickoff) and Love (we lean sit). Your "extra days save him" call is Jeanty — the later Sept 13 kickoff is exactly why we lean him play despite a quiet early week. And the easy, high-conviction plays — McCaffrey, Nacua, Hill, Kittle, Skattebo — are just that: high conviction.
We'll post the reactive injury report Saturday once the official designations are in. This piece is the forecast; that one is the confirmation. If we called it right, you moved 48 hours before your league did.
