Week 1 Injury Report: Deep-Dive Edition
The draft room fell in love in June. The practice reports filed for divorce in August. This is the gap between the name on the jersey and the role on the depth chart.
ZeroChalk Week 1 Injury Report — Deep-Dive Edition
Updated: September 7, 2026 (Monday of game week)
This is not inside information. It's a best guess from where these guys have been through the week — practice reps, camp reports, and beat reporting. We're now inside game week: Week 1 kicks off Thursday Sept 10 (49ers–Rams in Melbourne, on Netflix) and runs through Monday Sept 14. Official game-status designations (Questionable / Doubtful / Out) firm up on the Wed–Fri practice reports, so re-check the final report before your lineups lock. Play it accordingly.
Built from team-by-team deep dives (Ravens, 49ers/Rams, Giants, Raiders/Dolphins, Bengals/Buccaneers).
⭐ Featured: Zay Flowers (Baltimore Ravens, WR) — @ Colts, Sun Sept 13
The headline name of the slate, and the news is good. Flowers took a quad contusion in a camp collision with S Jaylinn Hawkins back in August — went down, walked off, diagnosed day-to-day. He then missed roughly two weeks of practice, which is where the worry crept in.
Here's the update that settles it: Flowers returned to practice Tuesday in limited fashion and was back to full team drills, no limitations, by Thursday (Sept 3–4). Beat reporter Matt Zenitz had him tracking to full-practice, and CBS's sources put the full expectation at "good to go for Week 1 vs. the Colts." Head coach Jesse Minter has been openly optimistic — the whole plan was built around having him ready for Sunday, Sept 13 in Indianapolis.
Two more reasons the panic doesn't hold: Baltimore handed him a $140M extension days before the injury, so there is zero incentive to rush a bruise that's already healed to full practice — and there's nothing structural here. A contusion that's back to full reps a week out is a solved problem, not a lingering one. He's coming off 1,211 yards and 5 TDs; the target share and the role are exactly where you drafted them.
Lean: EXPECT TO PLAY, high confidence. Start him as your WR1 with no hedge unless a surprise "limited" tag appears on the Fri/Sat report — and at full practice Monday of game week, that would itself be the surprise. The one thing to note is the team around him: DT Nnamdi Madubuike's status (below) is a defense/DST question, not a Flowers one.
🟢 Surprise — might play (returning ahead of the curve / from scary injuries, trending UP)
- George Kittle (SF, TE) — torn Achilles (Jan 2026 playoffs). Activated off PUP, no setbacks, made the ~15-hr trip to Melbourne for the opener. He took individual reps but not full team drills through early week, so it's a genuine ramp — but an ~8-month Achilles return in Week 1 is ahead of schedule and the arrow is up. Lean: lean play, confirm gameday (medium).
- Nick Bosa (SF, DE) — knee (ramping up). Making the Australia trip and ramping his reps for the opener vs. the Rams. Back inside the return window and confident. Lean: PLAY, trending up (medium-high) — IDP/DST.
- Cam Skattebo (NYG, RB) — recovered from a gruesome 2025 season-ender (dislocated ankle + broken fibula). Full camp participant, got through the preseason opener clean, and is looking like the RB1 into the Cowboys game. He himself says "I'll be ready to go." Coach Harbaugh cautions he's "not 100% twitchy/explosive yet" — real, but he's playing. Given the severity of the injury, a full Week 1 go is the surprise. Lean: PLAY, high confidence (temper the ceiling slightly on the explosiveness note).
🚫 Might not play (leaning OUT / real risk of sitting)
- Jaylen Wright (MIA, RB) — behind Achane; carries handcuff value but no clear starting path and buried on the depth chart. Lean: bench/handcuff-only.
- Ollie Gordon II (MIA, RB) — rookie depth behind Achane; a No. 3 backfield role in 2025 carried into 2026. Lean: stash/handcuff-only.
⚠️ Surprise — might not play (you'd pencil them in, but there's real risk they sit)
- Puka Nacua (LAR, WR) — the volatility play of the entire slate, and it's an off-field one. The injury is fine: the psoas issue from an Aug 11 practice is behind him, he returned to practice Sunday with no setbacks, and McVay expects him to play Thursday vs. the 49ers in Melbourne. The live risk is the NFL Personal Conduct Policy review tied to a civil lawsuit (alleged Dec 2025 incident; no criminal charges; his side calls it "horseplay"). As of the weekend he is not suspended and not on the Exempt List — and reporting suggests any discipline would likely wait until after Week 1 and the legal process. So he's a Week 1 start, but a ruling could theoretically drop and it would be a total zero. Lean: play, but roster a contingency (medium).
- Ashton Jeanty (LV, RB) — low-ankle sprain (Aug 23 in camp). Everything points to him playing the opener vs. Miami except his practice reps — he had not practiced with the team as of early game week and was working off to the side with trainers. Coach Kubiak is "optimistic" and says they're "counting on him," but he'll need to practice in some capacity first. The Wed–Fri arc is the whole tell: if he doesn't get on the field by Friday this flips toward limited/doubtful. Lean: lean play, low-to-moderate — watch the practice report daily.
- Malik Nabers (NYG, WR) — torn ACL (2025). Practiced through camp, has shed the red no-contact jersey and been cleared for full-contact team periods — real progress. But it's not a final commitment: Harbaugh says it's "reasonable to assume" he plays vs. Dallas, and Nabers himself stayed non-committal ("whenever that is"). The one elite skill name to double-check before kickoff. Lean: lean play, medium — but confirm gameday.
- Nnamdi Madubuike (BAL, DT) — returning from 2025 neck surgery. Passed his physical, came off PUP, and is back practicing — but this is a full-season-ending surgery return, so ease-in is expected. Matters for the Ravens' pass rush + DST, not your skill spots. Lean: questionable, monitor snaps (medium).
- Tee Higgins (CIN, WR) — heel contusion; DNP Tuesday, and Zac Taylor says it'll "limit him this week." Bengals expect him for Week 1 vs. the Bucs and say he'll "be good by the end of the week," but he's practiced less than Chase — the softer of the two Bengals WR situations, and a Friday downgrade is live. Lean: play with mild risk (moderate).
- Emeka Egbuka (TB, WR) — sprained toe (rolled up in mid-Aug joint practice). Rookie starter, day-to-day; a specialist confirmed the sprain is stable and the Bucs are "very optimistic," but beat reporting groups him with Jalen McMillan as "lingering issues" and not a lock. A toe setback in game week could flip him out. Lean: play, low-to-moderate.
👀 The rest (on watch — trending to play, monitor the official report)
- Ja'Marr Chase (CIN, WR) — knee (hyperextension). DNP Tuesday but the Bengals have no concern; he said he could've played the next day, and Taylor expects him "good by the end of the week." He and Higgins will be limited in practice as precaution. Lean: PLAY (high).
- Matthew Stafford (LAR, QB) — aggravated disc; missed camp time, back to practice on a reduced-rep plan (sits days 1 and 3 of each block to stay fresh). McVay named him the Week 1 starter vs. the 49ers. Lean: PLAY (high) — the reduced-rep note is management, not a red flag.
- Christian McCaffrey (SF, RB) — calf tightness / workload management (heavy 2025 usage), back to full participation and regular team drills. Not a real availability risk for the opener vs. the Rams. Lean: PLAY (high).
- De'Von Achane (MIA, RB) — clear workhorse into the Dolphins' opener vs. the Raiders; no game-week injury flag. Lean: PLAY (high).
- Jalen McMillan (TB, WR) — knee bruise, grouped with Egbuka as a "lingering issue"; rotational behind Godwin/Egbuka. Lean: limited — confirm.
- Theo Johnson (NYG, TE) — back practicing; low-end streamer value in the Cowboys game. Lean: play, low-end streamer (medium-high).
🚑 Confirmed OUT / four-game holds (context — don't wait on these)
- Micah Parsons (DAL, edge) — torn ACL, reserve/PUP (out min. 4 games). · Tank Dell (HOU, WR) — IR with a return designation. · Zach Charbonnet (SEA, RB), Ikem Ekwonu (CAR, OT), Taylor Moton (CAR, OT) — reported unavailable for the opening four games. · Plus each team's depth IR. Check nfl.com/injuries for the full league list.
The bottom line
The featured story (Flowers) is a green light — he's at full practice Monday of game week; start him as your WR1. Your volatility play is Nacua — the injury's fine, but an off-field conduct ruling could zero him, so roster a contingency. Your practice-report tells to watch Wed–Fri are Jeanty (still hadn't practiced with the team), Nabers (cleared for contact but non-committal), and Higgins (heel, limited). Your surprise upside is the ahead-of-schedule returns — Kittle, Bosa, Skattebo. And note the schedule: the 49ers–Rams open in Melbourne Thursday night (Netflix), so Kittle, Bosa, McCaffrey, Stafford, and Nacua all get their designations a day early — check that Thursday report first. Everything here needs a game-week recheck once official designations post Wed–Fri, Sept 9–12.
