Week 1 Start/Sit: Sit the Knee, Start the Role

The draft room fell in love in June. The practice reports filed for divorce in August. Here's the gap — matchup and role over name and hype.

Week 1 Start/Sit: Sit the Knee, Start the Role

Updated: September 7, 2026

This is not inside information. It's my best guess based on where these guys have been through the week: matchups, roles, and how they're trending. Play it accordingly.

Official Week 1 designations land Wednesday through Friday. Today is Monday. The first practice reports of game week hit this week, so treat every injury call below as a Friday recheck, not a lock. Two teams have a squeezed window: the Patriots and Seahawks kick off Wednesday night, so their guys need to practice by Tuesday or they're out of the conversation.

Games: NE at SEA Wed 9/9 (season opener, NBC) · SF at LAR at the MCG in Melbourne Thu 9/10 (Netflix) · the main slate Sun 9/13 · DEN at KC Mon 9/14.

Set of 22. Debatable calls only. No CMC, no Chase-the-target-hog, no Gibbs. If it's obvious, it's not here.

Starts

MarShawn Lloyd (GB, RB) — START. Josh Jacobs is on the Commissioner's Exempt List (NFL.com, Aug 30) — paid, but no practice and no games until the league clears him. Lloyd is the top ball-carrier in Green Bay's opener, and he handled a workhorse role with the starters in the preseason after two years lost to soft-tissue injuries. Kaleb Johnson is the committee risk, not the replacement. The volume is the best available RB2 on the board this week.

Geno Smith (NYJ, QB) — START. Stream him at Tennessee. The Titans allowed 19.1 half-PPR points per game to QBs in 2025 (24th). Smith has Wilson, Hall, and a better line than he had in Vegas. Superflex/QB2 more than a must-start in 1QB, but a clean streaming spot.

Kenny Gainwell (TB, RB) — START. Cincinnati allowed the most half-PPR points to running backs in 2025 (32nd, 27.0/g). Gainwell is the receiving back behind Bucky Irving. He does not need 15 carries. He needs the Bengals in coverage on Sept 13, and he'll get it.

Jalen Coker (CAR, WR) — START. Clear No. 2 behind Tetairoa McMillan, healthy after two shortened years, 33-394 over his last 11 in 2025 plus 134 yards in the playoffs. Chicago allowed the third-most half-PPR points to WRs a year ago (30th, 30.2/g). Flex him.

Mark Andrews (BAL, TE) — START. Isaiah Likely is gone. Andrews is the unshared red-zone TE again, at Indianapolis, which allowed the eighth-most half-PPR points to TEs in 2025 (25th, 12.4/g). Lamar still looks for him near the goal line.

Tyler Allgeier (ARI, RB) — START. Jeremiyah Love's high-ankle sprain (Aug 13) has the rookie's Week 1 sitting at about 50/50 (multiple reports through Sept 5–6), and LaFleur has stayed noncommittal. Allgeier — 514 yards and 8 TDs in Atlanta last year — is the early-down back if Love is out or limited at the Chargers. Love's name is the hype. Allgeier's role is the receipt. Start Allgeier and thank the injury report.

Rhamondre Stevenson (NE, RB) — START. TreVeyon Henderson still has not practiced (out since Aug 24, right ankle) and New England kicks off Wednesday in Seattle. Stevenson out-snapped Henderson 46 to 25 in the 2025 opener and says he came out of camp feeling great. Short week plus a top-2 RB defense is Henderson's problem, not Rhamondre's. He's a low-end RB2 with a starter's snap count.

Sam LaPorta (DET, TE) — START. Hip issue in mid-August, back at practice for two weeks and working up to full speed. Treat it as a bruise, not a structure problem. If he's a full participant by Friday he's in your lineup at New Orleans. Snap count is the only asterisk, and it's a small one.

George Kittle (SF, TE) — START (upgraded). Off PUP Aug 23, no limitations in the 49ers' latest practice, and he traveled to Australia for Thursday's Rams game. Last week this was a sit-unless-desperate; the practice signal has firmed up enough to trust him as a low-end TE1 in Melbourne. If your bench TE is a warm body, start Kittle. Just know a snap count is still possible on a body nine months off an Achilles.

Chuba Hubbard (CAR, RB) — START. Bell-cow role, healthy, home vs Chicago — a Bears defense that bled the third-most half-PPR points to backs in 2025. Not a household must-start, but a locked-in RB2 with volume and a soft matchup is exactly the kind of quiet play that wins Week 1 while everyone else sweats the knees.

Sits

Patrick Mahomes (KC, QB) — SIT. Torn ACL and LCL Dec 14, 2025, surgery the next day, no preseason snaps. He told reporters he's on track to start (multiple outlets, early Sept). Monday night vs Denver, which allowed 15.1 half-PPR points to QBs last year (8th). History on a knee that severe says rust before rhythm. If you have a streamer, use it Week 1. If you don't, you drafted the name, not the Week 1 version — set your expectations to QB2.

TreVeyon Henderson (NE, RB) — SIT. Right ankle, no practice since Aug 24, and the opener is Wednesday at Seattle. Seahawks allowed the second-fewest half-PPR points to RBs in 2025 (16.4/g). A rookie who hasn't practiced in two weeks, into a short week, against that front, is a flex you sit even if he's technically active. If he hasn't practiced by Tuesday, he's out of the conversation entirely.

Jeremiyah Love (ARI, RB) — SIT. High-ankle sprains let you jog and still fail the plant-and-cut test, and reports have his Week 1 at 50/50. Even if Arizona activates him at the Chargers, a rookie debut on a syndesmosis against a physical front is a fade. Own him. Start him the week he's a full Friday participant. Not before.

Terry McLaurin (WAS, WR) — SIT. Healthy enough after the 2025 quad, but it's a road divisional game at Philadelphia. Eagles allowed 22.0 half-PPR points to WRs last year (6th) and he'll see their top corner for four quarters. Reintroduction week, not smash week. Flex-down, not lineup lock.

Dalton Schultz (HOU, TE) — SIT. Career-high 82 catches in 2025, then Houston added Foster Moreau and drafted Max Klare. Buffalo allowed the second-fewest half-PPR points to TEs last year (6.6/g). Crowded room plus a top-2 TE defense. Stream someone else.

Malik Nabers (NYG, WR) — SIT. ACL plus meniscus, Sept 28 2025. He's in team drills but has stayed non-committal on Week 1, keeping the checkpoints "in-house," and Harbaugh has said the Giants must prepare to play without him vs Dallas. SNF against the Cowboys is not the week you find out he's on a snap count the hard way. If he's not a full Friday participant, do not start him on a maybe.

Emeka Egbuka (TB, WR) — SIT. Toe sprain from an Aug 12 joint practice. As of Sept 5 he still wasn't in full-team work, and Bowles is only "hopeful" for the Sept 13 opener. Big-toe injuries steal acceleration and the plant. He has a chance; he's not a lock. Sit until Friday is full, then recheck.

Jauan Jennings (SF, WR) — SIT. With Kittle back, Deebo gone to Washington, and Pearsall the ascending target, Jennings' target share is the one most likely to compress. Add a long trip to Melbourne and a Rams secondary that plays disciplined zone, and this is a flex you can do better than in Week 1. Not a drop, just a bench.

Coin-flips / your call

D'Andre Swift (CHI, RB) at Carolina — leaning START. Left a Sept 3 goal-line rep, and the scare was real given his groin history, but Schefter and team medical clarified it as a cramp and reports since have him set to play. He's the lead back at Carolina, a get-right matchup. Start him if Wednesday and Thursday come and go clean. The only thing that changes this is a new practice-report line, not the old cramp.

Ashton Jeanty (LV, RB) vs Miami. Right ankle, working off to the side Tuesday, and Kubiak said he's "optimistic" for Week 1. If Jeanty is a full participant by Friday, start the rookie — the workload is elite. If he's limited or questionable into Sunday, sit him and start Raheem Mostert / the first-team fill-in, and don't guess Saturday night on a syndesmosis.

Tee Higgins (CIN, WR) vs Tampa Bay. Heel contusion, DNP or limited early in the week, but Zac Taylor says both his receivers "will be good by the end of the week." The bruise isn't the issue; the availability history is. If Friday is full, start him against a Bucs secondary you can attack. If he's limited again, sit and let the offense funnel to Chase — who is nursing his own knee hyperextension but is also expected to play.

Jaxson Dart (NYG, QB) vs Dallas (SNF). He's the starter. Two preseason series, then he sat. Nagy's offense, under center, Nabers maybe out, Calvin Austin already lost for the year. The dual-threat floor is real; the Week 1 ceiling isn't. Superflex: start. 1QB with a safer QB2: you can wait a week and let the tape come in.

Friday lock list

  1. Henderson: Wednesday kickoff. Not practicing by Tuesday = out. Stevenson is the start regardless.
  2. Love: not a full Friday participant = Allgeier is automatic. 50/50 means plan for the sit.
  3. Jeanty: full Friday = start the rookie. Limited/out = the fill-in, and lower your ceiling.
  4. Nabers: not full = his room is Fields/OBJ/Mooney behind Dart. Do not start Nabers on a maybe.
  5. Higgins: "good by the end of the week" is a Friday claim, not a Wednesday one. Confirm the practice line before you trust the matchup.
  6. Swift: cramp, not a strain — but if a groin line shows up Wednesday, downgrade fast.
