Week 3 Start/Sit: The Bowers Gamble and Who Inherits the Targets
Twenty debatable calls for Sunday and Monday's Week 3 slate. No CMC, no Chase, no Gibbs. Injury designations are Saturday's final reports. Confirm inactives before lock.
Week 3 Start/Sit: The Bowers Gamble and Who Inherits the Targets
This is fantasy analysis only. It is not betting advice.
This is not inside information. These are the calls where reasonable managers land in different spots: an injury that opens a role, a questionable tag that could flip either way, a new starter nobody has real data on yet. No CMC, no Chase, no Gibbs. Designations below are Saturday's final injury reports (CBS Sports, Sept. 26). Recheck Sunday's inactive list before you lock anything.
HOU @ IND · Texans -1.5, 42.5 · Sun 1:00p
Nico Collins is out again with the hamstring, his second straight miss. In Week 2 without him, Dalton Schultz went 12-for-140. The rest of the Texans' skill group is picking at scraps.
Kayshon Boutte (HOU, WR): START, flex. He's been the inconsistent one all camp, but Collins' second absence is the clearest opportunity he'll get. Stroud has to throw it somewhere. What would flip it: a bad target share Sunday, in which case bench him again next week without regret.
Tyler Warren (IND, TE): START. Alec Pierce is on IR for a minimum of four games, and Warren already had a touchdown in each of the first two weeks before that target pool opened further.
LAC @ BUF · Bills -7, 50 · Sun 1:00p
DJ Moore (shoulder) and Keon Coleman (ankle) are both questionable, and Joe Brady has said both are game-time decisions.
DJ Moore and Keon Coleman (BUF, WR): SIT until the inactive list posts. A game-time call on a shoulder and an ankle isn't a lineup you set Saturday night. What would flip it: either one active and full-go on the final report Sunday morning.
Khalil Shakir (BUF, WR): START, flex-plus. If either Moore or Coleman sits, Shakir absorbs the target bump in a 50-point-total home favorite. Dalton Kincaid also gets more work in that scenario.
LAR @ DEN · Rams -2.5, 44 · Sun 8:20p, SNF
Puka Nacua (hip) is doubtful and didn't practice all week. He also missed Week 2.
Puka Nacua (LAR, WR): SIT. Doubtful with a week of zero practice isn't a lineup gamble worth taking. What would flip it: a limited-to-full practice bump Saturday that never showed up, or an active tag Sunday morning that contradicts the whole week's pattern, worth checking but not betting on.
Davante Adams (LAR, WR): START. He went for 195 yards and two touchdowns the last time Nacua sat.
Terrance Ferguson (LAR, TE): START, flex. Six catches for 54 and a score in that same Nacua-less game. A rookie tight end getting real routes in a top-10 offense is a real flex, not a name play.
BAL vs DAL (Rio) · Ravens -3.5, 53.5 · Sun 4:25p
Zay Flowers (hamstring) is questionable and limited only on Friday after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday. Reporting says he'd likely be on a snap count if active.
Zay Flowers (BAL, WR): SIT, or flex-only if desperate. A limited-practice questionable heading into a snap count isn't a full workload. What would flip it: a full practice Saturday or a report that the snap count is off.
Rashod Bateman (BAL, WR): START, flex. He was the leading Ravens receiver in Week 2 with Flowers out (7-88-1), and a Flowers snap count still routes some of that volume back to Bateman regardless.
CIN @ PIT · Bengals -3.5, 42.5 · Sun 1:00p
Michael Pittman Jr. is questionable with the foot, limited all week, and already missed Week 2. On the other side, Andrei Iosivas is out for Cincinnati.
Michael Pittman Jr. (PIT, WR): SIT. Limited every day and already sat once this season. What would flip it: a full practice report Saturday, which hasn't shown up yet.
Pat Freiermuth (PIT, TE): START, flex. If Pittman sits, his work rises in an offense that already funnels checkdowns to its tight end.
Mike Gesicki (CIN, TE): START, flex. Iosivas being out pushes more of Cincinnati's short-area targets his way, per the same reporting.
LV @ NO · Saints -3, 43.5 · Sun 4:25p
This is the one real gamble on the board. Brock Bowers (knee) is questionable and has not played a single snap in 2026 after a meniscus trim. This week is different from Week 2: no pregame workout, and the beat reporting through Friday reads more optimistic than any week since the surgery.
Brock Bowers (LV, TE): SIT, unless you have no other option. A player who hasn't played a down all year, coming off a questionable tag with no workout requirement, is exactly the kind of "trending toward" news that turns into a limited-snap debut. What would flip it: an active tag Sunday morning with no game-status caveat attached.
Michael Mayer (LV, TE): START over Bowers, even if Bowers is active. Mayer has the actual 2026 stat line, 9 catches for 55 yards on 11 targets across two games, and a healthy Bowers making his season debut will not walk into a full route tree Sunday. If Bowers sits again, Mayer is close to a must-play.
TEN @ NYG · Giants -2.5, 37.5 · Sun 1:00p
Jaxson Dart is done for the season (multi-ligament knee, surgery Friday). Jameis Winston is New York's new starter, and John Harbaugh has described the offense as a lane change, not a full redesign.
Jameis Winston (NYG, QB): SIT. A new starter in his first real start with a scaled-back offense, on the road against a Titans defense that isn't a total pushover, is not a streaming play yet. What would flip it: a clean, turnover-free Week 3 that earns a second look in Week 4.
Cam Skattebo (NYG, RB): START, flex. He's handled 67 percent of the Giants' running-back carries through two weeks, and a scaled-back passing scheme with a new QB should mean more early-down work, not less.
Malik Nabers (NYG, WR): SIT, flex-only. One catch for one yard in Week 2 with a shoulder issue is either an injury limiting him or a game plan that's moved on, and neither is a lineup lock behind a first-time starter. What would flip it: a real target share Sunday that shows the ball is still finding him.
SEA @ WAS · Seahawks -7.5, 40.5 · Sun 1:00p
Sam Darnold (glute) is fully cleared after missing Week 2. Marcus Mariota starts again for Washington in Jayden Daniels' place, and Washington is short a starting tackle (Sam Cosmi, concussion) on top of it.
Sam Darnold (SEA, QB): START, flex-plus. Cleared with no lingering designation, in a plus matchup as a 7.5-point road favorite against a Commanders defense that's now also down a starting tackle on the other side of the ball. What would flip it: any late setback report between now and kickoff, which hasn't surfaced.
Marcus Mariota (WAS, QB): SIT. A backup on the road as a touchdown-plus underdog, without his top target-runner behind him at full strength, is a stream you can skip this week.
SF vs ARI · 49ers -8.5, 47.5 · Sun 4:05p
Mike Evans (hip) is questionable, a DNP Wednesday and Thursday before a limited Friday. Reporting leans toward him playing, but it's not a clean bill of health.
Mike Evans (SF, WR): SIT, flex-only. Two DNPs before a limited practice, even with optimistic reporting, is a real injury, not a paperwork tag. What would flip it: a full Saturday workout with no in-game snap restriction mentioned.
Deebo Samuel (SF, WR): START, flex. He sits behind Evans on the snap chart in a healthy week, but an Evans limitation in a 12.5-point spot as an 8.5-point favorite still means real volume somewhere in this passing game.
PHI @ CHI · Eagles -4.5, 41.5 · Mon 8:15p
Dallas Goedert is out for multiple weeks (knee), and Hollywood Brown is out too. On the other side, Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring, and Chicago hasn't named a starter between Tyson Bagent (questionable, concussion protocol) and Case Keenum.
DeVonta Smith (PHI, WR): START. With Goedert and Brown both out, Philadelphia's remaining pass-catching group narrows around him even further than usual.
Chicago's passing-game skill players (Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet): SIT, flex-only. A Monday-night road matchup behind whichever of Bagent or Keenum gets the ball, with the starting QB out entirely, is not a week to trust the air attack. What would flip it: a confirmed Bagent start with a clean practice week, which reads as the better of the two outcomes but still isn't a locked-in passer.
Confirm before lock
