Week 6: The Big Change

Michael Pittman Jr.’s IR Move Resets Pittsburgh’s Receiver Room

Pittman is out for at least four games, Roman Wilson is sidelined too, and rookie Germie Bernard just inherited the most interesting routes in Pittsburgh.

Michael Pittman Jr. aggravated the plantar fasciitis in his left foot during Wednesday’s practice and used a scooter afterward to keep weight off it. By Saturday, Pittsburgh had placed him on injured reserve.

The foot had already cost Pittman Week 2. This setback brings a mandatory four-game absence, with Week 10 at Cincinnati on Nov. 15 listed as his earliest possible return. He won’t play against Tampa Bay in Week 6. (ESPN, RotoWire)

One public rest-of-season model registered the damage immediately. Stick to the Model dropped Pittman 43.3 expected half-PPR points since Oct. 7, leaving him at 76.1. That was the largest fall on its Oct. 13 board, ahead of Deebo Samuel Sr.’s 40.6-point decline.

The board offers one model’s price rather than an industry consensus. Pittman’s production gave the model little cushion: seven catches on twelve targets for 89 yards across three games. (Stick to the Model)

The odd part was how little receiving work came from so many snaps. Legion Report logged Pittman at an 88 percent snap share in Week 1, 73 percent in Week 3, and 72 percent in Week 4. RotoWire charted him at a 52 percent route share for the season, with only eight percent of Pittsburgh’s targets and thirteen percent of the targets thrown while he ran a route.

His Week 4 usage shows the problem. Pittman ran 27 routes on 45 dropbacks, but he drew four targets and finished with two catches for fifteen yards. He handled every snap from twelve personnel and only 54 percent from eleven personnel, which means part of his playing time came from heavier formations rather than a full-time receiving role. That makes Pittman difficult to carry in a standard redraft league unless the roster has an open injured-reserve spot. RotoBaller’s current read treats him as a standard-league drop and a dynasty hold. The four-game minimum matters, but so does the role waiting for him if he returns on schedule. Pittsburgh had already turned starter-level snaps into twelve targets.

Roman Wilson would’ve been the first receiver in line for more work. Then he dislocated a finger during Pittsburgh’s Week 5 win over Indianapolis. Wilson is expected to miss a couple of weeks, is seeking a second opinion, and has already been ruled out for Week 6 along with Ben Skowronek. (ESPN)

That leaves Germie Bernard.

The rookie has already handled a Pittman-sized route load once, posting an 86 percent route rate and eight targets in Week 2. Against Indianapolis in Week 5, Bernard caught six of nine targets for 80 yards.

Those are usable routes, not cleanup duty after the beer vendors have started packing. NBC Sports has Bernard as Pittsburgh’s waiver priority and a PPR WR4/FLEX for Week 6. Roughly 520,000 Sleeper managers added him over the previous 48 hours, according to FFLens. (NBC Sports, FFLens)

Metcalf remains the lead receiver with 37 targets and a 21.3 percent team target share. Bernard’s opening sits beneath that, alongside Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth, and Darnell Washington in Aaron Rodgers’ available group. Wilson’s eventual return could narrow the rookie’s runway, especially after Wilson drew six targets on eighteen routes and produced 74 yards with a touchdown in Week 4.

For the next couple of weeks, though, Bernard has the healthier hands and the clearer route to the field. Pittman’s fantasy value collapsed because four missed games were added to a role that had already produced fewer targets than its snap count promised. Bernard gets the next shot at making those routes matter.
